Chapter 8

It only took a little over an hour to get to the outskirts of Oneida. I had tried to contact the lieutenant colonel over the radio, but so far I hadn’t had any success. It was well after the 2:00 p.m. time that I had set up for us to contact them when we’d first come through.

“Slow down, Apache. Let’s not fly up on these people. Remember how trigger happy the first group that we came into contact with was. We don’t need a repeat.”

I radioed Cracker, who was driving the Stryker, and just like the last time, I had him go around us so that if anyone started shooting they would be shooting at a heavily armored IFV first. When we got a half mile or so away from the barricade that they had set up on this end of town, I had Apache stop. We were totally visible to anyone standing watch at the barricade, but too far away for their rifles to reach us. Reaching up, Ghost tied a white cloth to one of the radio antennas on the IFV, then he slowly pulled forward. When he was about a quarter of a mile away from the barricade, someone stepped out from behind it, and raised his hand for us to stop. When we did, he slowly approached us.

“This area is closed to outside traffic by orders of the Tennessee People’s Militia. You will have to turn around!” the soldier yelled.

“I need to talk to Lieutenant Colonel Marvin Drake. We came through here yesterday. It’s important that I talk to him right away. Tell him it’s Dave, the ex-U.S. Army Ranger Sergeant.”

“Wait right there. If you came through yesterday, then I don’t need to remind you that we have several people who have you covered. Don’t try anything, or we will be forced to fire on you.” He looked at the end of the barrel of the Stryker. “And I really don’t want to do that. I can’t even begin to explain how much I really don’t.” He sounded as terrified as he looked. “Wait right there. Please. It will take a few minutes to get him here.”

He walked back to the barricade, and talked to two young men who had stepped out. They all looked back at us with nervous glances as they talked amongst themselves. They were obviously extremely nervous. After a minute or so, one got on a bicycle and started towards town. I noticed that he kept looking back at us several times as he peddled as hard as he could.

“Think we have them worried, Dave?” Apache asked.

I laughed. “Just a little bit, brother. If I was staring at the hole on the end of that gun barrel, and all I had was an AR-15 and a cheap set of body armor, then rightfully so, I’d be scared myself. That little piece of steel covering his chest wouldn’t even slow down the 20mm round coming out of that auto-cannon.”

It took about ten minutes before we started to hear that same old, out-of-tune Pontiac driving towards us.
